Old Denim Jeans Can Help the Environment

What's Up?
We all have jeans that don't fit or we don't like anymore (or maybe we never liked from the beginning). There are many uses for recycled denim. Here is one idea to utilize those old jeans – turn them into grocery bags.
Idea
Denim Grocery Bags
How Does It Help?
Instead of using paper or plastic bags for your groceries, which usually end up in landfills, use old jeans to put your groceries in. A second environmental saving, is no new natural resources will be used to make paper or plastic bags for groceries.
Supplies Needed
- A pair of jeans, preferably a large pair
- Scissors
- Thread
- Pattern (See pattern below)
- Sewing Machine, or Needle
- Old Shirt, or Fabric

Don't Have a Supply Item -- Don't Fret
If you do not have one of the supply items here are some suggestions to obtain them economically.
Jeans
Try a garage sale or thrift store. The jeans do not have to be in perfect condition, and many times you can find a nice pair for a dollar or less. Also a neighbor or friend might have an extra pair they would like to get rid of. Do not be afraid to ask.
Sewing Machine
Many community centers, schools, and religious centers own sewing machines they are willing to let people use. Also try renting one for an hour. Many sewing stores have started this option for people who do not own a machine.
Pattern
I used the pattern at the website below as the base for my denim grocery bag. However, instead of using canvas, I used old denim from jeans.
